Ngatarawa, a large winery in Hawkes Bay in New Zealand has just opened a sales office and a showroom in Canton, China. “80% of our production is red and suits the Chinese market perfectly”, points out Alwyn Corban the director of the winery.
Nearly €9.44 million worth of New Zealand wines were sold in China between June 2009 and June 2010, an increase of 180% in just one year. This market has been stimulated by a free trade agreement between China and New Zealand, signed in 2008, which provides for the gradual elimination of customs duty on wine by 2012.
