Champagne sales reached record levels in Australia in 2011 as a result of a weak euro against the dollar and the European economic blues. Woolworths, the leading Ozzie distributor of alcoholic beverages increased its sales by 30% over the Christmas period. Australian consumers can now buy two bottles of Champagne for the equivalent of US$ 100 or €79, the cost of only one a few years ago. The wide range of champagnes available is encouraging Australian drinkers to experiment and consume more. Australia is now the 9th largest export market in numbers of bottles sold for Champagne worldwide. (Ubifrance – 4 January 2012)
