Zhou Hongjiang, the chief oenologist of leading Chinese wine producer Changyu, has announced that the company’s aim is to produce 400,000 tonnes of wine by 2015, in order to respond to Chinese demand, which Changyu does not expect to weaken. This represents double the present output and will be achieved when recently planted vines come into production. Changyu declares having a total area of 16,666 hectares (41,183 acres) of vines, especially in Xinjiang autonomous region, where Changyu claims to have 4,666 hectares (11,530 acres) already planted, hoping to reach 5,300 hectares (13,090 acres) in 2012. Developing a range of premium wines is priority and it is planned to open Château Changyu Baron Balboa in Xinjiang in 2012, followed by the probable opening of two more chateaux in Ningxia autonomous region and Shaanxi province in 2013 and 2014.
