The Philippines have taken the ruling by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) concerning their application of excise duty on imported distilled spirits to appeal. In August 2011, WTO experts ruled in favour of claims raised by the US and the European Union that the taxes applied to their spirits, which were 10 to 15% higher than those put on local beverages, were discriminatory.
