188 Portuguese native grape varieties out 188 Portuguese native grape varieties out of the country’s 258 have been planted for conservation by Joao Roquette, Managing Director of Esporao, the largest producer of Portuguese wine, working with the Australian winemaker David Baverstock, who makes Esporao’s wines. “It’s a way to make sure that these varieties do not disappear. Some of them were heading for extinction. They were all used at one time or another to make wine. Today they are no longer sought after, but tastes change and climate too”, explained Joao Roquette. “By planting these vines again, we are safeguarding our heritage, but a resource as well. This is a long-term investment over 10, 20 or even 30 years.”
