Rum was the only major spirits category in Europe to post an increase in 2009, with sales rising by around 2.3%, roughly on a par with its compound annual growth rate for the past five years (2004 to 2009). At 21.8m cases in 2009, rum is only the sixth-largest major spirits category and is dwarfed by vodka at 80.3m and whisky at 48m cases.
That European performance was even more impressive if you consider that growth came despite posting a near 5% loss in Spain, the largest of Europe’s rum markets. (IWSR / January 2011)
