According to a report published by the European Commission, between 2008 and 2009, exports of still and sparkling wines from the European Union increased in volume by 22% and by 1% in value to reach total sales equivalent to US$5.8 million, making wine the leading European food export. The U.S., Switzerland, Canada, Japan and Hong Kong were the main markets for European wines, which attained 70% market share in value. In 2010, wine was the main contributor to the increase in food exports, which resulted in the first positive food trade balance for the 27-strong EU that year. The wine committee that circulates this information attributes this commercial vitality to the current Common Market Organisation. (V&S News – 13 May 2011)
