Wine exports from Georgia grew by 34% in 2010 compared to 2009, reaching 15 million bottles, according to Giorgi Chaduneli, the spokesman for the country’s Ministry of Agriculture. This former soviet republic has not however managed to return to the export levels it enjoyed before 2008 of 59 million bottles. Following the embargo imposed by Russia, the primary destination for Georgian wines, in 2006, then the lightning war between the two countries in 2008, export sales of Georgian wines collapsed by 80%. In his statement, Mr. Chaduneli emphasized that “it is one of the government’s priorities to promote our traditional products and increase exports”. (Vitisphère / 3 January 2010)
