The 2010 harvest was the smallest that German growers have experienced in 25 years: it amounted to 76 million 9-litre cases (a little less than 6.9 million hectolitres), down 25% compared to 2009, which itself was 8% less than 2008.
In the short term, this situation will slow down the recovery of the consumption of German wines in Germany.
The VINEXPO study forecasts only 2.5% growth in the consumption of domestic wines between 2010 and 2014 on the German market, against the 7.51% expansion between 2005 and 2009.
The small 2010 harvest will not help the recovery of German wine exports either, which were hit between 2005 and 2009 with losses of 27.62% in volume and 0.6% in value. (VINEXPO - The iwsr / 7 March 2011)
