The National Cognac Board (BNIC) recently announced that, “In the absence of any opposition from interested parties within a period of three months, the Cognac geographical indication could become recognised in India within a year”. This follows the publication on 25 March this year of the request to register the Cognac GI on the Indian list of geographical indications. The request forms part of Cognac’s quest for weapons to combat counterfeiting and illegal use of the brand in India. (V&S News - 6 May 2011)
