Cognac protected as a geographical indication in India and Malaysia

20.10.2011 - Vinexpo news selection

India and Malaysia have just registered “Cognac” as a geographical indication (GI), making two new victories for the National Cognac Board (BNIC). Following four years of hard work and less than one year after the registration applications were lodged in December 2010, it is now India’s and Malaysia’s turn to recognise the Cognac GI. Registration provides a solid legal basis making it easier to fight more effectively against identity theft and the registration of illegal brands in these countries. Catherine Le Page, Director of the BNIC commented, “These two latest registrations, which follow that in China in December 2009, enable Cognac to extend its protection within Asia”.
