After India’s application at the end of January 2011 to become a member of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), the request is currently being processed. The diplomatic process of acceptation should take 6 months. What is more, the Director General of OIV, Federico Castellucci, has announced that “India is joining the OIV very soon to become the 45th member state in its own right”. India will thus be able to sit on the Executive Board and contribute to the commissions and expert groups.
At present, 44 countries are members of OIV. These are both producer nations – OIV member states account for 85% of world wine production – and consumer countries. Apparently, China has taken some steps towards applying for OIV membership, while the U.S. still remains uninterested in joining the Organisation. (Vitisphère - 3 May 2011)
