The yen was stronger in 2009 especially against the euro and the U.S. dollar, so wine purchases and consumption returned to growth, up 5.40% compared to 2005.
In 2009, Japanese wine consumption amounted to 27.85 million 9-litre cases, or 334 million bottles. The Vinexpo study forecasts further growth in wine consumption of 2.77% between 2010 and 2014. (Vinexpo – The IWSR / 19 January 2011)
