Malaysia: cognac sales show increase

08.10.2010 - Vinexpo news selection

Cognac has been rising in Malaysia since 2002 and, in 2009, reached a 10-year high of 161,500 nine-liter cases. Buoyed by the sizeable Chinese population, drinking trends tend to follow those of Chinese, with VSOP the most popular quality, representing 69.4% of the market, and XO and above claiming a further 30.2%. The market has been steadily moving towards the premium sector; in 2004, Xo and above sales represented just 17.9% of total consumption. Again like China, most consumption is in the traditional on-trade and gifting markets, and Martel is the leading brand, followed by Hennessy. (IWSR / August 2010)
