The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) and the Chinese Government have reached an agreement that will ensure the protection of the Scotch whisky name.
China has announced that it will recognize and protect ‘Scotch Whisky' as a Geographical Indication (GI) so that only whisky produced in Scotland can be labeled as Scotch in the Chinese market .
Gavin Hewitt, Scotch Whisky Association chief executive, said: "The Chinese Government's strong commitment to protecting consumers of Scotch Whisky from imitations is welcome. Scotch Whisky's recognition as a geographical indication is a major step forward, helping the industry to stop fake products." (Harpers / 8 November 2010)
