An area equivalent to 80,000 hectares (197,700 acres) or 10% of total winegrowing land in France should be organic by 2012. Between 2009 et 2010, the area of vines cultivated organically (including areas of vines converting to organic methods) grew by 32.8% or 52,000 hectares (128,500 acres), equivalent to 6.2% of the total area of land used for growing vines in France. 40% of this is already certified and 60% is undergoing conversion. The Independent Winegrowers of France announce that “85% of organic winegrowing is carried out by independent winegrowers”. (Vitisphère / 20 January 2011)
