The popularity of organic methods is such within the Aquitaine winegrowing industry that the lack of specific representation within the regional winegrowers’ associations needed to be rectified. ARBIO Aquitaine has done just that by creating a regional organic wine professionals’ commission. Winegrowers, represented by the Aquitaine Organic Winegrowers’ Union, the cooperatives and merchants trading in organic wines, met and elected their Chairwoman: Anne-Lise Goujon, an organic winegrower and merchant.
At the end of 2009, Aquitaine had 439 organic winegrowers and 5,464 hectares (13,502 acres) of organically cultivated vines or estates currently converting to organic methods, almost 4% of the total Aquitaine winegrowing area. Volumes of wines produced in Aquitaine from organically grown grapes are expected to be 4 times greater by 2015. (Vitisphère – Vinexpo / 22 September 2010)
