United Kingdom: The average price of a bottle of wine remains stable

10.02.2011 - Vinexpo news selection

Because of the countless discounts and promotions offered by British retailers the average price of a bottle of still light wine on the UK market is virtually unchanged.
This average price was US$8.53 per bottle in 2005 and US$8.50 per bottle in 2010.
The VINEXPO study foresees no further change either between 2010 and 2014.
It should be remembered that apart from VAT, the duty levied on this average bottle price represents US$2.62 per bottle, i.e. 30% of the total price paid by British consumers. Furthermore, exchange rate fluctuations between the British Pound and other currencies, especially the Euro, have accentuated the price pressure on foreign suppliers.
The UK nevertheless remains the 2nd largest consumer market worldwide for wines priced at more than US$10 per bottle, behind the U.S. and ahead of France. (VINEXPO / The iwsr – 10 February 2011)
