The 2010 harvest in France was below the 5-year average between 2005 and 2009 and can therefore be considered to be “small”, as it was in Italy, the U.S., South Africa and Germany.
However in 2010, having produced an estimated 419 million cases, France took back its position as the leading wine producer worldwide that it had lost in 2009 to Italy.
Nevertheless, when the average for the harvests from 2005 to 2009 is compared to the forecasts in the VINEXPO study for the period from 2010 to 2014, it becomes clear that French wine production (excluding wine produced for distillation) is diminishing. (Vinexpo – The IWSR / 17 January 2011)
