Scotch Whisky Association lobbies for reduction in customs duties

20.12.2011 - Vinexpo news selection

A delegation from the Scotch Whisky Association has travelled to India to meet government representatives and players in the alcoholic beverages industry, before the summit meeting due to take place next February regarding the free trade agreement with Europe. The association specifically lobbied for a reduction in the 150% customs duties on imported spirits, levied in the country. The association also insisted on better protection of the Scotch Whisky appellation, because although India consumes 140 million cases of whisky, making it in effect the leading market for whisky worldwide, only 1.5 million cases actually come from Scotland.
