Reunion Island’s wine seeks an IGP

22.12.2010 - Vinexpo news selection

The 13-hectare (32-acre) Cilaos vineyard on Reunion Island has started the quality process required to obtain a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). The Chai de Cilaos cooperative already gained Vin de Pays recognition in 2004.
Growing wine in Cilaos, “the only French vineyard in the southern hemisphere” is not easy because of its altitude and its precipitous terrain with no possibility of using mechanical methods.
The cooperative produces 30,000 bottles of wine per year from volumes that vary between 25,000 and 28,000 litres. (Wine-presse.info / 6 December 2010)
