The number of wineries in the US jumped 9% in 2010 after a 2% increase in 2009 and 1.5% in 2008. There are now 6,785 including the 562 new ones that opened over the last year. California has nearly half with 3,306, followed by Washington State with 628, Oregon with 509, New York with 255, Virginia with 195 and Texas with 185.
This increase is in response to the rise in the number of consumers, who buy their wines locally as well as general growth in wine consumption across the board in the US.
