Vietnam: Scotch leads the imports

13.01.2011 - Vinexpo news selection

Scotch represents over 34% of the total imported spirits market with an average compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10,5% between 2005 and 2009. There is a rough division, with whisky dominating the sales in the north of the country and Cognac in the south. This is similar to China. Growth in both categories was possible due to investment and marketing activity. The growth was driven mainly by super premium and premium blends. The Johnnie Walker range has been leading this category with nearly 70% of the Scotch market.
Cognac represents over 20% of the total spirits market, with a CAGR of 11% between 2005 and 2009. Hennessy, with 58% of the Cognac market has been leading this category for almost a decade.
According to Rémy Martin CEO Jean-Marie Laborde, “Vietnam could be viewed as a small China. There is a big Cognac culture there due to colonial influence of the French. Vietnam is a really promising market.” (IWSR / January 2011)
