Following the fashions of the Italian Renaissance, glass bottles began to appear on French tables in the 15th century. They were initially onion- shaped, but then became progressively longer and thinner. Bottles at this time were only used for serving wine at table for purely decorative reasons. For three centuries, bottles remained refined artefacts of luxury. (L’Amateur de Bordeaux - February 2011)
