Germany is the largest market for sparkling wines. This grew by 3.85% between 2005 and 2009 and will increase by a further 1% between 2010 and 2014.
While the consumption of white wines that account for 44% of all wines drunk in Germany is on the decrease, down 7.01% between 2005 and 2009, that of red wines is regularly increasing, up 2.81% between 2010 and 2014. The same is true of rosé wines, whose consumption grew by 21.65% between 2005 and 2009.
In fact, the total consumption of wine in Germany stabilises as drinkers’ preferences gradually change from imported wines, down 7.94% between 2005 and 2009, to domestic wines, up 7.51% in the same period.
It is a point that Germany is the only market in the world where the wines consumed are shared practically half and half between imported and local wines (49% / 51% respectively). VINEXPO - The iwsr / 7 March 2011)
