The Champagne Wines Board (CIVC) has just finished an administrative procedure in India, which will result in the registration of the Champagne appellation in this country. Champagne is the first non-Indian geographical indication to be recognised there.
Products from the Champagne area that are sold on the Indian market will be fully protected against locally produced or imported sparkling wines that are put on sale with the name “Champagne” or any derivative term.
In 2009, 200,902 bottles of Champagne worth €3.4 million were sent to India. (Wine-Presse Info.com / 30 November 2010)
